NRL 2022: Australian Kangaroos, Rugby league world cup, Peter V’landys, selectors, Mal Meninga, Brad Fittler, Billy Slater, Origin coaches

Peter V’landys is set to be appointed Kangaroos’ chairman of selectors alongside Mal Meninga and Origin coaches Brad Fittler and Billy Slater.

Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V’landys is set to be appointed Kangaroos’ chairman of selectors as Australia plan towards this year’s World Cup.

Both Blues coach Brad Fittler and Maroons rookie Billy Slater will join V’landys and Kangaroos boss Mal Meninga to select the Australian squad for the tournament initially scheduled for 2021.

According to the SMH, the proposal for V’landys inclusion on the selection panel is due to be signed, hoping to steer the nation’s best rugby league talent to World Cup glory.

Covid forced the tournament to be rescheduled to mid-October, with the Australian side not having taken the field for almost 1000 days.

Australia and New Zealand opted against sending their playing group to the UK, with infection rates still high and vaccination rates low within the squad in July 2021.

The Kangaroos will start firm favorites to walk away with the trophy, despite having not played as a group for almost three years.

Mal Meninga is set to name a 40-man squad during this year’s Origin series, which will be cut to a smaller group after the grand final.

That group will then travel to England, with only 13 days between the grand final and the Kangaroos’ first game against Fiji on October 15.

A number of selections battles will be at the forefront of the selector’s minds when viewing this years state vs state match-up.

Daly Cherry-Evans and Nathan Cleary are fighting it out for the halfback spot, while Harry Grant, Bent Hunt and Damien Cook are the frontrunners for the No.9 jersey.

Slater and Fittler will take over from Laurie Daley and Darren Lockyer who were a part of the most recent Australian selection panel.
