Trump Complains To Maggie Haberman About, Well, Everyone in New Book

Excerpts from a highly anticipated book by New York Times journalist Maggie Haberman just dropped, unveiling juicy quotes from former President Donald Trump—and he has mean things to say about everyone, from fellow politicians to his own customers.

Haberman detailed three interviews with the former president in The Atlantic on Sunday. During one of them, he apparently turned to two of his aides from her to say how much he enjoyed being interviewed by Haberman: “I love being dela with her, she’s like my psychiatrist.”

He seemingly felt comfortable enough to relay how he really felt about his once-allies to the award-winning journalist who has been chronicling Trump’s antics for ages.

He discussed Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who supported Trump throughout most of his presidency, but eventually broke from him after the Capitol attack when he said Trump was “practically and morally responsible” for the insurrection. (Despite this statement, he voted to acquit the former president.) Still, Trump described Mitch McConnell to Haberman: “The Old Crow’s a piece of shit.”

Trump also expressed distaste for how former Vice President Mike Pence handled the certification of the election on January 6. Apparently, Trump said ahead of the day’s turbulent events: “’Mike, you have a chance to be Thomas Jefferson, or you can be Mike Pence’…He chose to be Mike Pence.”

senator Lindsey Graham (RS.C.) has been a consistent ally of Trump. Following the Mar-a-Lago search, Graham said that there will be “riots in the streets” if Trump is prosecuted for his handling of government documents. Earlier this month, Graham said that if Trump wins in 2024, it will be “one of the greatest political comebacks in American history.” According to Haberman’s excerpts, Trump took note: “You know why Lindsey kisses my ass? So I’ll endorse her friends.”

Haberman also reminded Trump that before the 16 primary elections, he had been compared to the then-New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, to which Trump replied: “I was compared to him? Why? I didn’t know I had that big of a weight problem.” (Christie endorsed Trump in 2016.)

According to Haberman, Trump made similar comments to about Florida Governor Ron DeSantis—calling him “fat,” “phony,” and “whiny”—even though he endorsed DeSantis in 2018 and once described him as his “great friend.”

Trump even complained about people spending money at his establishment, telling his consultant to “look at those losers” while observing the patrons of Trump Plaza casino.

Haberman’s book, Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America, come out on October 4.
